What is the perfect exercise for you?

What is the perfect exercise for you?

When it comes to exercise, the health and fitness world is often buzzing with the latest trends and the “best” routines. The choice and messages out there can even be overwhelming.

But the truth is that there is no one perfect workout regimen that fits everyone.

The best exercise for you is usually the one you enjoy. Something accessible and that keeps you going back for more.

What you choose may change over time - our bodies are unique and constantly changing - what works wonders for one person might not be suitable for another. What you did in your 20’s may not be suitable now.

Understanding this can transform your approach to exercise, making it more enjoyable and effective.

What are your goals?

Are your exercise goals a perfect physique, bigger biceps or are looking for a social experience such as a racket ball or a team sport? Are you happy to run alone or would you rather join a rowing club or take a Pilates class? Does slow and gentle yoga appeal to you or would like to speed things up with a dance class.

Whatever your exercise goals and passions there is something out there for you.

Anatomy Matters

Our anatomical differences play a significant role in determining the best exercise for each of us. For instance, someone with long limbs might find running more challenging than someone with a more compact build, but they might excel in activities like swimming or rowing.

Joint structure and flexibility can also influence the types of exercises that feel comfortable and are sustainable.

Example:

Pilates can be fantastic for strengthening your core, improving posture, flexibility balance and strength. Finding the right class and instructor for you is crucial and there are lots of options in and around the New Forest. (Here at Bay Tree we work with Kate Fielding a fantastic instructor )

Strength training is excellent for building muscle and bone density. Specific exercises, weights, and repetitions should be tailored to your body’s capabilities and goals. We have lots of specialist gyms in the area for example professional one to one at Fitness Evolution in Sway and Solent CrossFit in Lymington.

Age Considerations

As we age, our bodies undergo various changes that affect how we should exercise. Young adults might recover quickly from high-intensity workouts, whilst older adults might need a different approach to avoid injury and ensure joint health.

Example:

Low-impact exercises like walking, swimming, or cycling in the forest are fun for all ages or those with joint issues. You can even do great yoga while sitting on a chair. These activities provide cardiovascular benefits without putting undue stress on the joints.

Resistance training remains important at all ages, particularly pre-and post-menopausal women. but the weights used and the frequency might vary. For older adults, using lighter weights with higher repetitions can help maintain muscle mass and bone health without risking injury.

Medical History and Conditions

Medical history is another important factor in choosing the right exercise. Conditions such as arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, or previous injuries require tailored exercise plans that accommodate and support healing and health.

Example:

A person with arthritis might benefit from aquatic exercises. The buoyancy of water reduces stress on joints, allowing for movement without pain.

Individuals with heart conditions can benefit from moderate, consistent cardiovascular exercise. Activities like brisk walking or stationary cycling can improve heart health without overwhelming the body.

Finding What You Enjoy

Perhaps the most important reason to find the right exercise is enjoyment.? Consistency is key to any fitness regiment, and you are more likely to stick with something you enjoy. Explore different activities until you find one that excites you and fits your lifestyle.

Examples of Different Styles of Exercise:

Dance-based workouts like Zumba or tap-dancing can be a fun way to get your heart rate up while learning new skills.

Outdoor activities such as paddle boarding, cycling or gardening can combine fitness with the joy of being in nature.

Team sports provide not only physical benefits but also social interaction and a sense of community.

Exercising at home - the internet has a huge variety of exercise clases so you can easily fit sessions around child-care and work without doing your hair!

Embrace an individualised approach to exercise! You can make exercise a sustainable and enjoyable part of your life. Remember, there is no “one size fits all”, so find what you love, and love your life.
